Former âGood Morning America Weekendâ anchor Janai Norman is âtaking a breakâ from the US â and has moved her family to South Africa months after her run on the show abruptly ended without warning.
Norman, whose contract was quietly not renewed by ABC in April, revealed the move Friday and appears to have settled in South Africaâs KwaZulu-Natal province with her husband, Eli, and their three kids, according to The Sun.
âLess than two months out from publication, forcing myself to post daily for 60 days and make use of stories,â Norman posted to her Instagram Stories, referring to her upcoming memoir, âBreaking.â

âOn that note, pre-orders are really important. Have you ordered yours?â she added in a separate post.
âAnd speaking of breaking, have I mentioned my family is taking a break from the US?â Norman then wrote over a photograph of a palm-lined street overlooking the water.
She shared a video of monkeys gathered beside a road in a final post, adding: âAnd now we see monkeys all the time.â
Norman’s move comes seven months after she was booted from her âGood Morning America Weekendâ co-anchor role when the Disney-owned network declined to renew her contract.
Norman, who joined âGMA Weekendâ in 2022 after being hired by ABC News in 2016, was ânot well-likedâ by network bosses and had reportedly clashed with colleagues, Status reported in August.
She first joined ABC News as an intern with NewsOne in 2011.

Norman spoke about the sudden departure at the time, saying she had hoped to have more time at the network.
âIâd hoped that weâd have more time. Itâs been hard on me that our time was cut short. I have loved my job,â she said in a video posted to X in April.
âSo, it really breaks my heart that I donât get to say goodbye. Iâm so sorry that I donât get to say goodbye. It would have been fun,â she added.
She subsequently unfollowed âGMAâ on social media.

Norman, who was born in South Africa and raised in DeKalb, Ill., listed her six-bedroom home in Montclair, New Jersey, for $3.2 million earlier this year.
The home is listed for $3 million, a slight reduction from the initial asking price.
Norman has since publicly criticized ABC’s coverage of several stories after leaving the network.
She accused the news organization of becoming âcomplicit in upholding white supremacyâ while criticizing Michael Strahan’s interview with the parents of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old found dead after a boating trip in Mississippi.
âBless Michael, âcause he had it right the first time. The question should have been, âDo you believe that?â Not asking these grieving parents to defend a decision that we donât even know for certain their deceased son made,â she said in an Instagram video in July.
âThat was not an objective question. Subjectively, I would say that it was insensitive,â she added.
