Trump defied by GOP Senators who render beloved bill ‘effectively dead’: reports

A bill that President Donald Trump has been pushing hard to get passed before the midterm elections is “effectively dead,” according to multiple reports.

Bloomberg reporter Steven Dennis wrote on X Saturday that the SAVE America Act “isn’t going to pass before the August recess. It’s effectively dead for the midterm elections.”

The SAVE America Act would require states to look for noncitizen voters and force voters to confirm U.S. citizenship when participating in elections, mainly through a valid passport or birth certificate. It also pushes voter ID at polls.

Critics describe it as both “dystopian” and redundant”

Trump pushed hard for the GOP Senate to pass it. He even refused to sign a bipartisan housing bill to try and force the issue, though the bill became law anyway. However, Trump appears to have lost his push as Capitol Hill journalists reported on Saturday that the Senate flew off for a five-week recess without passing it.

“Yeah, the Senate is going to go on a five-week recess. A lot of ink spilled to get to the result that seemed obvious all along,” Dennis added.

“By UNANIMOUS consent, the Senate adjourned for recess until Monday, September 14 without passing the SAVE America Act,” wrote NBC News senior congressional reporter Sahil Kapur. “Nobody objected to the request or asked for a roll call vote.”

Conservative social media influencer Eric Daugherty wrote that Senate “Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) forced the Senate into August recess without the Save America Act, but MIKE LEE and ASHLEY MOODY were among those yelling at the top of their lungs objecting.”

Thune, notably, has been the target of Trump’s ire over the stalled SAVE America Act in recent weeks.

“The Senate passed a number of important items this week, but I am disappointed that we failed to advance two major priorities,” wrote Sen. Todd Young (R-IN). “A budget reconciliation bill with SAVE America Act provisions and the Stop Insider Trading Act, to ban members of Congress from trading stocks. Discussions continue on how to get the votes needed to pass these bills.”
