Bari Weiss’ revamped “60 Minutes” suffered another ratings blow during its second week of the season.
“The once-venerated CBS News show” drew 6.5 million viewers Sunday, an 18% drop from its season debut, according to preliminary Nielsen figures reported by The Daily Beast.
The decline came one week after the season opener attracted about 7.94 million viewers — the storied newsmagazine’s smallest premiere audience since at least the turn of the century.
The latest episode also drew just 1.1 million viewers in the coveted 25-to-54 age group, plunging 30% from the premiere. It was beaten in that key demographic by Fox’s “Best Medicine” and CBS’ “Big Brother.”
“Viewers are continuing to lose interest in the revamped newsmagazine show,” according to The Daily Beast. The outlet described Weiss as the network’s “MAGA-curious” boss.
She was named CBS News editor-in-chief last year despite having no television experience.
Sunday’s episode featured the correspondent debut of Ross Douthat, the conservative columnist Weiss poached from the New York Times, where he’d written for 17 years, as part of a shakeup that pushed out veterans including Scott Pelley and Sharyn Alfonsi. In his first segment, Douthat interviewed Patrick Clancy, whose wife, Lindsay, was tried in the strangulation deaths of their three young children; that trial ended in a mistrial this month after jurors deadlocked over her insanity defense.
