Rep. James Comer (R-KY) accused President Donald Trump of sinking GOP candidates ahead of the midterms, according to a news outlet that called him a “dimwit” for doing so.
During the Fox News interview in question, Comer complained about diminishing donations to GOP candidates as money mounts in Trump’s MAGA Inc. Super PAC.
“A lot of the individual members’ online donations are down because more of the small-dollar donors have gravitated towards MAGA Inc.” Comer lamented on Fox News.
The New Republic responded by calling Comer a “MAGA Dimwit.”
The news outlet argued Comer had admitted Trump “is harming their midterm hopes,” The New Republic noted.
MAGA Inc. has spent only a small portion on midterm races, including for Sen. Darline Graham Nordone (R-SC), but on Friday, Trump touted that the Super PAC has raised close to $1 billion.
“We’re going to need every penny of it,” Comer said on Fox News.
Other Republicans have echoed Comer’s hope that Trump will spend more, according to The New Republic. Trump said on Friday that he plans to spend more and touted his plan for a campaign tour to boost GOP candidates in competitive races during the last month of the midterms.
Comer said during the appearance that he’s not criticizing Trump and praised how “well” he has “managed” his Super PAC money by not yet spending any of it, according to The New Republic.
“Comer shed light on a deeper way that Trump is screwing his party,” The New Republic argued. “If small donors are giving to MAGA Inc. to the exclusion of Republicans, it’s in no small part because Trump is helping make that happen.”
The New Republic noted that Trump has “repeatedly” declared that the GOP “failed him” instead. It pointed out that Trump recently elevated the claim that the GOP has let him down by continuing to “slow walk” his agenda.
