At least 12 people were injured, including six minors, in a shooting near Florida A&M University’s football stadium in Tallahassee, Fla., on Saturday night, shortly after the university’s homecoming game, the police said.
Preliminary findings suggested that an altercation had preceded the shooting, which investigators believed was an isolated incident involving two or three people, the Tallahassee police chief, Lawrence Revell, said at a news conference.
The youngest victim was 11 years old, Chief Revell said. One victim was in critical condition, three were in serious condition and eight were in stable condition. Eleven of the 12 victims had gunshot wounds and one was believed to be a Florida A&M University student, he said.
No suspects were in custody as of Saturday night.
Officers responded just before 8 p.m. to the shooting on two streets near Bragg Memorial Stadium, the police said. Florida A&M University’s football team had faced the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff at the stadium hours earlier.
Florida A&M University is one of the nation’s largest historically Black colleges and universities. Its weeklong homecoming celebration is one of the biggest events on the university’s social calendar, attended by students, faculty and alumni.
Chief Revell said that there were about two dozen officers in the immediate area at the time of the shooting.
