Jack Schlossberg, grandson of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, announced he will run for Congress next year.

In a social media post Tuesday, Schlossberg said he would be seeking the Democratic nomination to replace longtime Rep. Jerry Nadler in New York’s 12th Congressional District. Nadler, a leading liberal figure for the Democratic Party in Congress, said in September that he would not in seek reelection.

“This district should have a representative who can harness the creativity, energy and drive of this district and translate that into political power in Washington,” Schlossberg wrote in an Instagram post that attacked President Donald Trump, highlighted the cost of living, and emphasized that he was born and raised in the district.

Schlossberg attacked what he described as a “crisis at every level,” accusing Trump of “cronyism not capitalism” and “stripping citizens of their civil rights and silencing his critics.”

Schlossberg, son of Caroline Kennedy and nephew of late John F. Kennedy Jr., is a social media personality with more than 1.5 million followers across TikTok and Instagram.

He is also an outspoken critic of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., his first cousin once removed and the current head of the Department of Health and Human Services, who is known for his skeptical approach to vaccines.

Since 1947, there have been only two calendar years in which a Kennedy did not hold some kind of federal public office, elected or appointed, The Washington Post reported last year. Under the Biden administration, Schlossberg’s mother served as U.S. ambassador to Australia, while her cousin Joe Kennedy was the U.S. special envoy for Northern Ireland.

New York’s 12th Congressional District is one of the wealthiest in the country and includes Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Upper East Side and Midtown areas.

Nadler, who has represented New York for more than three decades, told the New York Times in September that he was stepping down to make room for younger candidates. “Watching the Biden thing really said something about the necessity for generational change in the party, and I think I want to respect that,” he said.

Other Democratic candidates for the seat include New York State Assembly Members Micah Lasher and Alex Bores, and journalist Jami Floyd.
