A 28-year-old woman who was stabbed while jogging along the Brooklyn waterfront is in the hospital on life support, according to a police report.
The woman, Katie Suarez, of Gravesend, Brooklyn, was stabbed while running on the Shore Parkway Greenway near Bay 17th Street, the police said. As of Sunday, no arrests had been made.
The events unfolded on Friday evening, after Ms. Suarez left her job at TD Bank at the Caesar’s Bay Shopping Center, a retail complex on the Brooklyn waterfront, around 6:30 p.m., according to the internal police report.
Soon after, she met with her mother close to where she worked. Ms. Suarez changed into her running gear, gave her work clothes to her mother and then began to run west along the waterfront path, the report says.
Around 8 p.m., her father called Ms. Suarez to ask where she was, noting that he was close to the TD Bank. Ms. Suarez told him that she was a half-mile away, a distance she could run in roughly five minutes, according to the report.
Ms. Suarez never showed up.
Concerned, her father, who was still outside TD Bank, called again, but Ms. Suarez did not answer, the report said. He went to the waterfront to search for his daughter and found her with two stab wounds to her neck. Ms. Suarez was taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn in critical condition, the police said.
Ms. Suarez had participated in city races before, including those organized by New York Road Runners, which hosts the New York City Marathon. (Ms. Suarez was not registered to compete in the marathon on Sunday.)
“We were sad to hear of this horrible attack,” Crystal Howard, a spokeswoman for the Road Runners, said in a statement. “Our hearts are with her family and the running community.”
The attack came a week after a 39-year-old woman was raped while on an evening jog on the east side of Central Park. The woman told the police that, on Oct. 24, around 8:30 p.m., a man brandishing a knife dragged her into a wooded area, raped her and ran off, the police said.
The stabbing of Ms. Suarez recalled the 2016 murder of Karina Vetrano on a running path in Queens, which sent hundreds of investigators on a monthslong search for the killer.
Ms. Vetrano, 30, was on an after-work jog in Spring Creek Park near the Queens waterfront on Aug. 2, 2016, when she was sexually assaulted and strangled.
The police arrested Chanel Lewis, then 20, in February 2017. He was later convicted of murder.
