Two helicopters collided midair near a small airport in northern Oregon on Thursday afternoon, killing all three people aboard, officials said.
After the collision, the helicopters crashed in a field near the municipal airport inMcMinnville, Ore., a city southwest of Portland, said Sam Elliott, the Yamhill County sheriff. One of the helicopters was carrying a student pilot and a flight instructor, he said in a news briefing on Thursday evening. The other helicopter had only one person on board.
Roads around the crash site, including a section of Highway 233, were closed on Thursday.
The cause of the collision has not been determined, Sheriff Elliott said. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration said in separate statements that they were investigating.
Sheriff Elliott identified the flight instructor as Maddie Aasbo, 22, of Texas. He declined to name the other person on that helicopter, saying only that he was a student pilot from Britain.
The sheriff said the person on the other helicopter was Tyler Sturdevant, 38, of Newberg, a city in Yamhill County.
