2 killed, multiple injured as vehicle drives onto Wichita field during soccer game

Two people — including a 6-year-old boy — were killed and 10 others injured as a vehicle drove onto a field during a soccer game in Wichita, authorities said Saturday.

Authorities who responded to the incident, which took place at 3:25 p.m. local time at the Stryker Sports Complex, found community members rendering medical aid to the injured and a truck on the field, with the driver still inside the vehicle, along with two juveniles.

The driver, a 34-year-old woman, is in custody, authorities said, and cooperating with the investigation.

Authorities did not say whether they believed the incident was intentional.

“We are still working to determine how this happened and why this happened,” said Aaron Moses, a captain and executive officer with the Wichita Police Department. Police have asked witnesses to provide video of the incident.

The other person killed was a 35-year-old man and of no relation to the boy.

Authorities said 10 people were transported to hospitals for traumatic injuries, some of them severe. They ranged in age from 5 to 68. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. One additional person was taken to a hospital with nontraumatic medical issues.

“Today is a heartbreaking day for Wichita,” said Wichita Mayor Lily Wu. Families came to the soccer complex for a game, she said. “No one could imagine the tragedy that would unfold.”

Moses said the driver had a valid driver’s license and no outstanding warrants but did not provide further details, citing a preliminary investigation.

Moses said he believed the driver had a child playing soccer that day, but not on that field.
