Letters to Sports: Clippers were oh so close, yet so far

The Clippers’ season has come to an end but better than anyone expected. No consolation but a great job by head coach Tyronn Lue for guiding the Clippers from a disastrous 6-21 start and finishing with more than 40 wins.

Coach Lue led the team, overcoming major obstacles throughout the season with a player investigation, injuries, internal strife and major roster changes at the trade deadline. As usual for Clipper fans, wait till next year.

The Clippers are the NBA’s version of Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle With You.” Yes, they have had 15 straight seasons of playing .500 or better, and owner Steve Ballmer has brought them respectability, but for their entire 56-year existence — which has contained many clowns and jokers — they still have never [attained] their goal of winning (or even reaching) the NBA Finals.

No comparison

Some Dodgers and Angels fans have recently written to complain about high ticket prices and that ownership should use some of their profits to lower prices. I agree with the Angel fans since owner Arte Moreno doesn’t use his profits to improve the team. However, Dodger ownership doesn’t put those profits into their pocket, they continually reinvest back into the organization in order to maintain a championship team. I would much rather watch a perennial winning Dodger team on TV than go to three or four games a year and watch a perennial mediocre team.

Doesn’t get any better

In today’s breathless, hyperbolic sports coverage, superlatives like “GOAT,” “best” and “worst” get tossed around way too frequently, and recency bias usually limits these evaluations to players seen on TV over the last three or four decades rather than the entire history of a particular sport. But after eight dazzling years, Shohei Ohtani has proven he’s a genuine “all-time great.” He’s a legit No. 1 starter and one of the two or three top power hitters in the game. And all this after two Tommy John surgeries.

Where’s the patch

Davey Lopes was an all time Dodger and baseball lifer. A key part of a historic infield and a Word Series champion. Also a four-time All Star! Isn’t he worthy of a patch on Dodger uniforms? Who goofed?

A regal moment

One of the many reasons Anze Kopitar is my favorite player is that he plays the game the way it should be, with class and sportsmanship. He has represented the Kings and the NHL in a very honorable way. He will be missed.

Congrats to the Kings making the playoffs! And, for the first time in four years, they won’t have to play Edmonton. After being beaten by the Oilers like a drum annually, even top-ranked Colorado is a refreshing change.
