Watchdog alarmed as another Trump official caught using Signal to conduct business

Another one of President Donald Trump’s government officials may be using Signal to conduct official business at the Department of Justice, according to a watchdog group.

American Oversight sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Attorney General Pam Bondi on Wednesday, arguing that Ed Martin, who leads the DOJ’s Weaponization of Government group, appears to be auto-deleting files using an app such as Signal. The watchdog group argued that Martin may be violating the Federal Records Act if this is the case.

“To the extent that Martin is using Signal or any similar encrypted messaging application, these messages are at heightened risk of unlawful removal,” the letter reads in part. “Such messages are sent and received on individual cellphones and, on some apps like Signal, can only be collected from those devices, as opposed to accessibility via an enterprise-level search.”

“Signal also includes an auto-delete function by which a user can opt for their sent messages to disappear and be deleted from both the sender’s and recipient’s devices within a short period of time,” the letter continued. “Without proactive preservation of these messages related to official DOJ business, use of applications like Signal with the auto-delete function enabled is a flagrant violation of the FRA.”

Martin has been involved in multiple high-profile DOJ operations, such as the mortgage fraud investigations into Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
