House censures MAGA lawmaker after probe into ‘inappropriate conduct’

The House overwhelmingly voted Tuesday to censure Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-NC) after an ethics investigation found that he engaged in “persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct towards two young female staffers,” according to an NBC News report.

The resolution passed 413-2, with Edwards and Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) casting the only opposing votes.

“The resolution is a formal rebuke of Edwards, who is in his second term, but does not force him out of office,” the report said. “After the vote, Edwards was required to stand in the well of the House chamber, before his colleagues, as Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., read the resolution aloud.”

Edwards responded by saying he respected the House vote but continued to reject the Ethics Committee’s finding.

“I have apologized for where my judgment fell short,” he wrote in a post on X. “But I will not confess to conduct I did not commit simply to make this moment easier. He added: “The House has spoken. So have I.”

The MAGA lawmaker, who is not seeking reelection, will leave Congress when his term ends in January.

I respect the House vote. I do not accept the conclusion that it produced. The Committee found no sexual activity, no proposition, no quid pro quo, and no violation of federal sexual-harassment law. It then crossed the gap between those facts and a finding of sexual harassment… — Congressman Chuck Edwards (@RepChuckEdwards) September 1, 2026
