Vice President JD Vance said he would not be shocked if the Antichrist was walking among us, then defended President Donald Trump’s meme depicting himself as God.
Vance made the remarks in an interview with podcaster Bryce Crawford, published Monday as an episode that ranged across end-times prophecy, unidentified flying objects and the spiritual condition of Silicon Valley.
During the interview, Crawford confronted the vice president over an artificial-intelligence-generated image of Trump that had troubled him and pressed Vance on what he made of it. The image appeared to present Trump as a holy figure.
“And I’m a Christian. I saw the photo. It made me upset. I’m not gonna lie,” Crawford said. “My personal opinion — I don’t know how he thought he was a doctor in the photo.”
“I mean, he was in a white robe with a red sash on it, you know? And that makes me upset as a Christian,” Crawford continued.
Following backlash over the photo, Trump backpedaled by claiming that the image depicted him as a doctor. Although the evidence did not support that. In Monday’s interview, Vance waved off all of the facts in defense of the president.
“So it’s like, did Donald Trump mean to post a meme of himself as God? No,” Vance replied. “I — he did not mean to mock or mimic God. That’s just not who he is.”
The image Crawford described was posted to Trump’s Truth Social account in April and drew condemnation from religious leaders and from some of the president’s own supporters. Trump appeared in a white robe and red sash, one hand holding a ball of light and the other extended in a gesture of healing, CBS News reported.
The post stayed online for roughly half a day before Trump deleted it, according to Snopes. Trump published the image on Orthodox Easter, days after he criticized Pope Leo XIV over American military action, CBS News reported.
“I did post it, and I thought it was me as a doctor, and had to do with Red Cross, as a Red Cross worker there, which we support,” Trump told reporters. “Normally I don’t like doing that, but I didn’t want to have anybody be confused. People were confused.”
While speaking to Crawford, Vance also argued that there could be an Antichrist on Earth now.
“I think that there are, like, things about the world that make me feel like I’d be not shocked if the Antichrist was walking among us,” Vance told Crawford. “I mean, my view on it is — so, one, do I think that we’re in the end times? I don’t know.”
Vance’s spiritual interests also informed his explanation for unidentified flying objects, which he told Crawford he has no classified answers about.
“Like, I don’t have the file that says, ‘Oh, this wasn’t a UFO, it was actually a demon,’” Vance said. “And my attitude is, if they are real, isn’t it as likely they’re angels or demons as they are extraterrestrials?”
The darkness Vance said he does recognize is in the technology industry, where he worked as an investor before entering politics.
“And there are things that some of the AI companies — you see happening where you feel like there is some really, really weird spiritual dark energy,” Vance told Crawford, noting that he saw some of the AI companies as “kinda satanic.”
“So I tend to think, like, while I wouldn’t be shocked if we are living in the end times, what I’m trying to focus on is doing as much of God’s work as possible right now,” the vice president said. “And if that leads to the end times, okay.”
