U.S. Central Command confirmed new strikes against Iran in a new escalation of the six-month-old war launched by President Donald Trump.
CENTCOM announced the strikes Tuesday amidst the long-running closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has severely restricted the global supply of crude oil and rattled financial markets.
“Today at 12 p.m. ET, U.S. forces began striking Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets in Iran,” CENTCOM posted on X. “The strikes follow recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American service members deployed to the region.”
U.S. forces struck two Iranian launchers on Iran’s Larak Island on Sunday in the first known strike in Iran since late July, and two oil tankers, one Saudi and the other South Korean-owned, were hit by projectiles Monday night as the U.S. and Iran resumed hostilities.
