President Donald Trump, missing in action Saturday after the Senate confirmed his former criminal lawyer as attorney general but rendered his voting bill “effectively dead,” quietly emerged to platform an on-point takedown of his beloved legislation.
Trump, without comment, quietly shared video on Truth Social of former Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democratic rival in the 2024 presidential election, explaining her serious reservations with the SAVE America Act.
“They’re trying to mess with your ability to vote,” said Harris. “You’re going to have to have proof of who you are through a passport, which a lot of Americans don’t have, or a birth certificate — same point.”
Harris concluded Trump merely wanted to create “obstacles” to make it difficult for Americans to vote.
Trump’s followers rewarded this offering with vitriol against “crumby communists” and “cheating Commiecrats” — which might have been what wanted after the Senate abandoned the bill to go off on vacation.
Bloomberg reporter Steven Dennis wrote on X Saturday that the SAVE America Act was “effectively dead for the midterm elections.”
The SAVE America Act — which would require states to force voters to confirm U.S. citizenship when participating in elections — has been described by legal experts as redundant and dystopian.
What’s more, Trump’s relentless push to see it pass infuriated members of his own party in the Senate.
White House demands that Majority Leader Sen. John Thune (R-SD) do more to pass it outraged the majority leader and his allies.
“This idea that he can just command members of the Republican conference to get in line is just a fantasy,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said earlier this month. “It’s creating a circular firing squad for Republicans.”
But Trump’s so-called “fantasy” appeared to be alive and well on Truth Social Saturday.
“You would think Democrats would work together for a cure for stupidity,” wrote one user. “But ‘stupidity’ just might be a major requirement to be a Democrat…”
“I guess people who agree with her think, most Americans are too stupid or ill-equipped to prove their citizenship,” one of Trump’s repliers wrote the president. “Once again, THEY THINK YOU ARE STUPID!!!
