Fans of President Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again movement melted down Sunday after former President Barack Obama came to the defense of one Democratic lawmaker.
Last week, the Trump Department of Justice executed a search warrant at Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) residence in Washington, D.C. The search was part of an ongoing investigation into Omar’s immigration status, according to reports.
Omar has described the move as part of the Trump administration’s retribution campaign. Trump has repeatedly painted Omar as an immigration fraudster even though neither he nor his surrogates have presented any evidence in court backing up that claim.
On Sunday, Obama blasted the move to raid Omar’s home in a lengthy post on X.
“It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota,” Obama wrote.
“The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same,” he continued.
The post caused MAGA fans to melt down on social media.
Dan Bongino, the former deputy FBI director in Trump’s second administration, seemed appalled that the former president would advocate for the equal treatment of political foes under the law.
“This cannot be real,” Bongino wrote. “This petty tyrant lecturing us about “American democracy” is like being lectured by a screaming five-year-old about self-control. Sit down, Mr. President, everyone knows who you really are.”
Philip Buchanan, a MAGA influencer who goes by “Catturd” online tried to compare the raid of Omar’s home to the criminal investigations that Trump maneuvered around after he left office the first time.
“You set-up (sic), framed, and spied on an incoming President. You should set (sic) this one out Hussein,” he wrote on X.
Laura Loomer, another MAGA activist and influencer, was even more curt.
“Barrack Hussein Obama, our nation’s first Muslim president, comes to the defense of jihadist Somali Congresswoman Ilhan Omar,” she wrote on X.
