Hurricane Isaias is barreling across Alabama at an inopportune time for the state’s largest university.
In Tuscaloosa, a highly anticipated football game on Saturday between the University of Alabama and the University of Georgia was still scheduled for 6:30 p.m. But the University of Alabama said that there would be no tailgating allowed before noon on campus and that ESPN’s “College GameDay,” a popular pregame show typically hosted outdoors, would be moved to an indoor arena.
Tuscaloosa, which is about 60 miles southwest of Birmingham, is in one of the 40 counties under a state of emergency in Alabama. While the storm is expected to move past the city by Saturday afternoon, university officials said they would continue to monitor the weather before kickoff. Meteorologists say the storm could cause power outages and downed trees and power lines.
President Trump had planned to attend the game, but the White House press office said in a statement on Friday that he would not be going. On Wednesday, he had told reporters that he did not want to take the focus away from people who respond to weather emergencies.
