CNN conservative Scott Jennings delivered a stark warning Thursday to a prominent Trump administration official caught up in a controversy involving a reported $100,000 payment request.
The moment came during an appearance on CNN’s “The Arena,” when Jennings weighed in on reports about text messages involving Kimberly Guilfoyle, a Trump ally serving as U.S. Ambassador to Greece. Jennings suggested Guilfoyle should be considering her future in the administration.
“It’s extremely unseemly, these text messages,” Jennings said. “There’s no other way to read it.”
“Again, may not be illegal, has to be investigated,” he said. “I assume that at the State Department that is the next thing that will happen.”
But Jennings went further, adding that Guilfoyle could face serious consequences if the controversy continues.
“If I were in her shoes right now, I would be considering what I wanted to tell the president, the Secretary of State, about my future,” he said.
“Because when you’re in an appointed position like this, and you hold a position of trust with the government, and then you become a distraction or an embarrassment to your principles, that’s a problem,” Jennings continued.
The CNN conservative analyst added that if more damaging information emerged, Guilfoyle would need to be transparent.
“Only she would know that,” he said. “And she needs to be transparent with her principles about that.”
New York Times journalist Lulu Garcia-Navarro largely agreed with Jennings’ analysis. She suggested the reporting surrounding Guilfoyle opened “an entire Pandora’s box of questions about this transaction and their relationship.”
“Obviously this is hugely unseemly. Obviously this is deeply problematic, if true,” Garcia-Navarro concluded.
