Outrage erupted Thursday after reports revealed that Donald Trump’s Justice Department is seeking a criminal indictment against Cassidy Hutchinson, the former White House aide whose explosive testimony helped expose the president’s actions surrounding the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.
Prosecutors in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division presented evidence to a federal grand jury this week alleging Hutchinson lied to Congress, according to Punchbowl News. No charges have been filed.
Former Trump White House deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews was among those rushing to Hutchinson’s defense.
“Cassidy Hutchinson had her entire career ahead of her and she was willing to sacrifice it to do what so few in Washington are willing to do: tell the truth,” Matthews wrote on X.
“She is an American hero and this shameless witch hunt against her is nothing more than a vindictive waste of time and taxpayer resources,” she added.
Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) also condemned the reported prosecution effort.
“The President’s targeting of her shows yet again that he’s more concerned with imprisoning his opponents than the cost-of-living crisis impacting Americans across the country,” Durbin wrote in a social media post.
The Bulwark’s Tim Miller offered a one-word response: “Despicable.”
John Jackson, a U.S. veteran of the Ukrainian armed forces, called Hutchinson “a patriot.”
“This attempted prosecution is a Russian-like disgrace that signifies the decline of a nation into a mafia-like chaos,” he wrote on X.
Gregg Nunziata, a former Republican Senate aide, delivered another blistering review.
“We are governed by gangsters,” he told his social media followers.
“Just what voters have been asking for: more political retribution against Trump’s perceived enemies,” the MeidasTouch Network wrote.
