AG James’ Cornell investigation: Letters to the Editor — Oct. 6, 2026

The Issue: Gov. Hochul’s appointment of AG Letitia James as special prosecutor in the “Cornell 7” case.

Am I the only one who finds it oddly coincidental that the useless governor of New York has given the Cornell rape case to another useless politician for investigation purposes shortly before the midterm elections (“A mistake to appoint Tish: foes,” Oct. 4)?

She must have had a blessed epiphany, because suddenly she is taking a personal interest in a horrible crime. But where was she when illegal immigrants were killing citizens of New York?

This woman will do anything to garner votes so she can continue to destroy this state even more over the next four years — pathetic.

Ralph Manente

Yonkers

Hochul needlessly injecting herself into the Cornell case raises legitimate concerns over a tragic allegation being used to energize a dispirited political campaign.

The complainant deserves a thorough investigation and the accused frat boys deserve the presumption of innocence and due process. Yet those principles are undermined when elected officials make public declarations before the evidence has been fully reviewed, then replace local prosecutors after a case becomes politically combustible.

The Cornell matter should not be decided by headlines or cowardly political calculation. New York deserves justice free from campaign-season grandstanding.

Michael Mulhall

Moseley, Va.

Is the governor serious in appointing the corrupt, unfair hatemonger Letitia James — who can’t be trusted with any case — to handle the Cornell University rape investigation?

Assigning her to the Cornell case is equivalent to assigning Charles Manson to a murder case.

Lou Bivona

Belleville, NJ

Gov. Hochul’s decision to appoint Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor in the Cornell 7 rape case is a joke.

James’ incendiary statements of support for the alleged victim on social media leaves no doubt that these young men will never be treated objectively. Her refusal to address that comment when asked by a reporter is typical of her arrogance.

Appointing James to investigate will guarantee a corrupt outcome. She is a disgrace and unfit to be attorney general.

Robert DiNardo

Farmingdale

During my career as a prosecutor in New Jersey, I tried a number of rape cases to successful conclusions. Cases of this nature are particularly difficult and hinge almost entirely on the credibility of the victim.

While Hochul properly exercised her authority by appointing James as special prosecutor, she has deliberately turned a serious investigation into a virtual gong show.

If nothing else, James has shown herself to be a cynical, callous political hack who cares little for the truth or justice. No doubt, she will further embellish this reputation by misusing this case to further her own interests.

Mitchell Schwefel

Barnegat, NJ

If history is any guide, Hochul, like most politicians, will use any method to secure a vote.

By appointing AG James as special prosecutor, the governor seems to be sending a not-so-subtle message to women to give her their votes because she has their backs.

She’s also concerned that Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman is narrowing the gap on her. Voters can see through you, Gov. Hochul.

Michael Headley

Brooklyn

James can’t prosecute the Cornell rape case because she won’t be a fair and independent prosecutor. Hochul made a major error in naming her to prosecute this alleged crime.

If these individuals (white, black or whatever) did what they’re accused of, they should be prosecuted and sent to prison. But you have to have a fair and impartial prosecutor.

Gene O’Brien

Whitestone

Hochul and James are doing what communists do by prejudging the facts and joining the lynch mob. Their statements are not just a rush to judgment but also cheap politics in an election year.

The suspects are innocent until proven guilty.

Mathew Mari

Manhattan
