A Doctors Without Borders staff member who had been working on the Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of Congo tested positive for the virus, the organization said Thursday.
The person who tested positive is being evacuated from Congo and will be treated at a hospital in the Netherlands, according to a Doctors Without Borders statement.
There have been 3,982 deaths and 8,224 cases so far in this Ebola outbreak, according to a daily update published Thursday by the Congolese government.
That means that this outbreak, which is tied to the Bundibugyo virus and saw its first case identified on May 15, is the largest in Congo’s history and likely to become the worst in history, outpacing the West African epidemic that lasted from 2014 until 2016 and killed more than 11,000 people.
The response has been hobbled by insufficient resources following Western aid cuts, conflict in the area that makes it difficult for health workers to move, and mistrust in communities of doctors and nurses on the ground.
