TSA officers are no longer allowed to sit at work — and travelers are nervous: ‘More tired and more cranky’

TSA agents just got the chairs pulled right out from under them.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has just changed its policy for all Travel Document Checkers — workers who check passengers’ licenses and passports — and it’s not looking good for their knees.

Each agent will now be forced to stand, as the agency is removing all chairs where they would normally sit and grab your identification. A TSA spokesperson told a Fox affiliate that the policy change will enhance security at the stations and will improve traveler experience once they arrive at the airport.

“This welcome change reinforces both our security and our commitment to hospitality by having these officers on their feet and alert,” the spokesperson told Fox 35. “All our officers must meet fitness for duty requirements to be capable of performing their vital national security function while simultaneously creating a welcoming and professional environment for travelers.”

The change comes almost two months after TSA Administrator David Cummins was confirmed to head up the agency.

The TSA has already begun the process of removing the chairs in most commercial airports.

The move did not sit well with the American Federation of Government Employees TSA Council 100 — a union representing TSA agents. The group said there was no formal notification to any of its local chapters.

Additionally, the agency said in a statement that removing the chairs was a complete lack of consideration for employees who are on their feet all day.

“These chairs serve as basic ergonomic and safety support for officers that stand and walk on hard surfaces all day,” the union wrote. “TSA is treating this matter like it is a privilege — it is not; it is basic safety and common decency for the workforce.”

Future travelers are also not excited over the policy switch. Many heard the news on socials and chimed in — fearing the all-day feat would not make the agents any nicer.

“So they’re going to be more tired and more cranky. Greeaaaaat. That’ll make for a lovely experience for all, I’m sure,” one user wrote on Facebook.

Another chimed in and wrote, “I feel like they might be crabbier if they have to stand all day but what do I know.”

A third brought up concerns that the move would tire agents faster, as they have less time to rest.

“This is a nothingburger. This is just policy for the sake of it. It doesn’t accomplish anything; I would like my security screening agents to be less fatigued,” they wrote.

Next time you’re traveling through an airport, maybe try not to look so tired.
