A sold-out crowd for Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear in Washington rose in applause after he hinted again he is eyeing the White House.
Beshear (D) told Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, the moderator and another possible Democratic contender for 2028, that he once thought his 2023 reelection bid in Kentucky would be his last campaign.
“Sitting here today, I’m not sure that’s true,” Beshear said Tuesday night. “And while that is not any sort of announcement, because that would require me to fill out paperwork, I just won’t leave a broken country to my kids or to our future generations.”
Beshear’s appearance to promote his new book offered an early look at a potential presidential campaign platform that highlights his ability to win in a ruby-red state even as he championed the Affordable Care Act and supported abortion and LGBTQ+ rights.
Beshear was also quick to acknowledge other Democratic governors considering a presidential bid, including California’s Gavin Newsom and Illinois’ JB Pritzker.
To the potential primary opponent sitting across from him, Beshear quipped: “Based on the time we’ve been here tonight, I think we make a pretty good team.”
The crowd once more erupted into cheers.
