Dem gubernatorial candidate attacked by ‘armed individual’ at fair: campaign spokesperson

Ohio Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton was attacked by an “armed individual” Sunday while attending the Canfield Fair near Youngstown, her campaign spokesperson claimed in a statement published on social media.

“While attending the Canfield Fair, an armed individual lunged at Dr. Acton, injuring multiple people,” reads a statement from Addie Bullock, Acton’s campaign spokesperson.

“Dr. Acton and [her husband] Eric are grateful for the swift and decisive action of law enforcement and are praying for the recovery of those injured. This kind of violence has no place in Ohio. Dr. Acton will always stand up to the chaos, hate and vitriol that pits us against one another.”

According to Chris Anderson, the chair of the Mahoning County Democratic Party, the suspect was apprehended by law enforcement shortly after the incident and “was found to be armed with multiple weapons,” NBC News affiliate WLWT reported.

Acton was elected the Democratic gubernatorial nominee in May, and is slated to face off against the GOP nominee Vivek Ramaswamy in November. In a statement, Ramaswamy’s campaign condemned the attack on Acton.

“Candidates should be able to meet with voters without having to worry about threats or violence,” said Connie Luck, Ramaswamy’s campaign spokesperson, according to WLWT. “What happened today is completely unacceptable and has no place in politics, and we hope that no one was hurt.”
