Julia Louis-Dreyfus lifts lid on ‘Seinfeld’ set ‘friction’: We did ‘butt heads’

Julia Louis-Dreyfus described “friction” on the “Seinfeld” set during a new interview.

When the actress was asked on Tuesday’s “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast episode whether there was tension, she replied, “Of course. Yes. Tons.”

The 65-year-old, who played Elaine Benes for nine seasons of the NBC series, explained, “I mean, it’s hard to do anything really well, and it takes a lot of work, and you’re going to butt heads.”

In addition to Louis-Dreyfus, the show’s main cast members included Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander and Michael Richards as the four friends navigate New York City life.

She noted that while Seinfeld, 72, and Larry David, who co-created the show, were “collaborative” with the cast, “sometimes there was an argument.”

Ultimately, Louis-Dreyfus described her experience on set to co-hosts Benny Blanco, Lil Dicky and Kristin Batalucco as “just being friends together and just hanging out.”

She clarified, “That sounds as if it was just hanging out. It was a lot of work to make the show.”

However, the “Veep” alum, who earned an Emmy for the role in 1996, added, “What I mean was we were all, like, kids. And we had our own idea and [the writers] had their own idea of exactly what they wanted to do, which was not the norm at the time in terms of structured television.

“So I think there was an air of freedom because of that,” she continued. “We had a lot of fun making it.”

Reps for Seinfeld, David, Alexander and Richards did not immediately respond to Page Six’s requests for comment.

Louis-Dreyfus’ comments come on the heels of her previously detailing a “big fat argument on set” during an “Awards Chatter” interview.

“Jerry and Elaine sleep together in that episode and they sort of make a deal about it,” she recalled in May of the Season 2 episode, saying David, 79, and executives from Castle Rock Entertainment disagreed on “whether or not to turn this into a will they, won’t they?”

“Larry was livid. He did not want anything to do with the idea of romance, the cute, the sexy,” Louis-Dreyfus said — and David did end up getting his way.

Elsewhere in the episode, the “Saturday Night Live” alum mentioned her character is not in the “Seinfeld” pilot — which, she said in 2025 she has “never seen.”

The award-winning show ran from 1989 to 1998.
