Bessent’s bombast boomerangs back: ‘Not funny…but still laughing’

A member of President Donald Trump’s cabinet has critics rolling in the proverbial aisles over a comment that was supposed to chastise them.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s words came back to bite him Wednesday morning as a video clip circulated on X of him lashing out at the press.

“”Everyone news outlet should be ashamed,” he said, ” [for] taking a lying regime at face value.”

Bessent said this in response to a question about the ongoing war in Iran and when it might possibly end. The Treasury secretary was apparently outraged by the suggestion an end to the conflict was not coming soon.

“Iran does not have control of the strait and they are in a death spiral,” he said.

But critics suggested the “death spiral” occurred at the end of Bessent’s response — when he told journalists not to trust regimes.

Said Bill Kristol, “That’s why we at the Bulwark do not take the Trump regime at face value.”

“First ballot Projection Hall of Famer,” quipped journalist John Harwood.

“How ironic that Scott Bessent, a tool of Trump’s lying Regime is talking about this,” replied political commentator the Possum Politic.

“Is Bessent trying to be a comedian?” asked X user Bob Heaslip. “He’s not funny but everyone at the G-20 is still laughing at him.”

Last but not least, here’s the response From the desk of Groucho Marx: “Everyone in this audience and every news outlet should be ashamed for taking a lying regime at face value. Now, I’ll take a few questions on Iran!”
