Ontario Premier Doug Ford taunted Donald Trump on Monday, threatening to cut off electricity to the United States in response to the president’s escalating trade war with Canada, warning: “He better have a pack of batteries.”
“We power 1.5 million homes and businesses,” Ford said in a new Associated Press interview, according to the Daily Mail. “Everything’s on the table. I’ll do whatever it takes.”
Ford also threatened to withhold critical minerals if Trump continues squeezing Canadian manufacturers.
“I’ll cut them off,” Ford insisted Monday. “You won’t get a grain of sand out of Ontario.”
His warning came hours after Trump announced that U.S. tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, automotive parts and steel would climb to 50 percent beginning Jan. 1.
“Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years,” Trump posted on Truth Social early Monday. “Canada will be treated like a state no longer.”
“They feel entitled, and yet, we don’t need Canada, they need us,” he added.
Ford accused Trump of declaring “economic war against his closest friend and ally” — and invoked Ronald Reagan in his attack.
“He’d be throwing up … if he knew what was going on, spinning around in his grave right now,” Ford said. “Ronald Reagan would be disgusted with President Trump.”
The escalation follows the collapse of month-long negotiations after Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected U.S. trade demands.
