Political analysts sounded the alarm on Thursday after a new poll about a critical swing-state Senate race was released.
A recent Fox News poll conducted in Michigan found that MAGA candidate Mike Rogers has a slight lead over progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who has recently been criticized for campaigning with the controversial streamer Hasan Piker. Rogers polled at 51% support among registered voters compared to 47% for El-Sayed, according to the poll.
The poll was released just 82 days away from one of the most consequential midterm elections in recent history. Democrats are vying to take back both the House and Senate, which would give them the power to investigate the Trump administration and the president himself.
President Donald Trump has already signaled that he intends to meddle in the election in some fashion, as some experts are warning that he will declare a national emergency to prevent Republicans from taking steep losses. The president has also tried to create new rules to limit mail-in ballots, which the courts have blocked thus far.
Analysts reacted to the poll on social media.
“A pretty sobering poll for Abdul, but a lot of time left to turn it around,” Mike Nellis, a Democratic strategist, posted on X.
“If Democrats win Texas and Alaska Senate but lose Michigan, that should be a pretty clear indication of which ideology and type of candidate is more electable,” Jaron Zhou, former head of politics at Kalshi, posted on X.
“Rogers’s strength comes from the fact the GOP coalesced around him: 96% of Republicans back him,” Eric Michael Garcia, D.C. bureau chief for The Independent, posted on X. “But while 9 in 10 Democrats (91%) and nearly all Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) supporters (98%) back El-Sayed, only 69% among non-DSA Democrats and independents do.”
“Michigan is the only battleground Senate race Fox News has polled where Republicans are ahead. Democrats lead in Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Iowa, Texas, and Maine. That makes this a particularly rough poll for the El-Sayed campaign,” Ellis Bates, election analysis fellow at VoteHub, posted on X.
