President Donald Trump has created an environment in which his own base is incapable of weighing facts rationally and listening to the media, MS NOW’s Katy Tur argued on Monday — and this has come back to haunt him now that he wants his base to stop going down conspiracy theory rabbit holes about the Jeffrey Epstein child trafficking case files.
Tur made the case while speaking with Leigh Ann Caldwell, chief correspondent at Puck News, about the shooting attack at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
“We don’t have a lot of attention span, but also from a tactical standpoint, the president — to flood the zone is something that the White House does very effectively and very purposefully in order to make it hard for people to understand what’s happening,” said Caldwell. “And even members of Congress can’t even keep up with their staff.”
“I mean, and I think politicians … they bear some — everyone bears responsibility here,” said Tur. “I’m not pretending the media is perfect, but it’s been decades of tearing down the media, the so-called gatekeepers, and accusing us of being liars.”
Trump, she continued, “has done this on overdrive now for 10 years. And I mean, I think … a good example of that coming back to bite you is the Jeffrey Epstein conspiracy. Donald Trump saying, why are you guys still focused on that? Even though he’s told everybody not to trust any of the people who might tamp down on it. And this is another example of it.”
“You know, this is Donald Trump’s, you know, saying this is a bunch of crazy conspiracy. The idea that it didn’t happen,” Tur added. “And yet the people who normally would have been in a position to push back against that and to establish some truth, he’s also called a bunch of liars.”
