CNN’s chief data guru, Harry Enten, was stunned on Thursday night after another Democrat outperformed expectations in a special election.
Progressive activist and organizer Analilia Mejia defeated Republican Joe Hathaway in the special election for the New Jersey 11th seat that was vacated by former Rep. Mikie Sherrill when she ran for New Jersey governor. Mejia’s victory was announced just minutes after the polls closed. Her victory also brings the Republican majority in the House of Representatives down to just one vote.
Enten noted that Mejia’s victory wasn’t surprising, but it marked the seventh consecutive race in which Democrats outperformed expectations by 10 or more points in the polls. That is happening at a time when Trump’s approval rating among voters has cratered by 20 points since late March, Enten said.
“It’s an absolute disaster,” Enten told host Kaitlan Collins on “The Source.”
Enten added that Trump’s recent attack on New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani won’t help matters, as he remains popular with a majority of voters, according to polls.
On Thursday, Trump posted on Truth Social that Mamdani is “ruining” New York City with his high taxes.
“Trump is out to lunch on this,” Enten said.
