The Urge to Shop

Well, we made it through two and a half weeks of European runway shows and over a dozen editions of The Fashions. (If you enjoyed it, tell a friend, send them our way!) It’s good to be back in New York, and I’m ready to return to the regularly scheduled Tuesday and Friday programming.

An unspoken side effect of staring at a boundless stream of clothes is that eventually your mind drifts to the deficiencies in your own wardrobe. I began to fantasize that a tweed jacket really could heal me, or that the next pair of jeans I buy would finally be the one. This calculus is what brands count on, of course — that you’ll be intoxicated by all of that newness, thrilled by visions of a different you.

I wish I could say that after more than a decade of attending shows I am immune to the shoppies, but I’m not.

And so I returned home with a vintage Issey Miyake crew neck sweatshirt and two pairs of old Levi’s (I’m in a very jeans part of my life) from the Archivist; a black woven belt from Charvet, whose shop was even busier after the Chanel acquisition; and a quarter-zip sweater from Emily Dawn Long’s pop-up. Could I have bought it from Emily back in New York? Sure. But I had to have it right then. (Never mind that the temperature was still in the 70s.) I also purchased, via Instagram, one of Jake Burt’s one-off shearling collared jackets, a contortion of a Carhartt-style work coat.

Am I especially afflicted? Well, duh. But I bet a lot of you have a yen for newness, perhaps a vestige of the back-to-school shopping mind-set that still lingers into adulthood. I certainly heard it when I got back stateside and spoke with my colleagues about their fall targets. Here, they share what they’re after. (And, as ever, send us what purchases you’re plotting: [email protected].)

Marie Solis: A couple years ago, our editor Stella Bugbee made a comment about sweaters that I’ve thought about ever since: that you need only two — one for home and one for the rest of the world.

Thus I’m in search of the sweater I’m going to introduce to my public life. I’m inexorably drawn to the chocolate just-off polo knit from Phoebe Philo. At about $1,700, though, I have to move on. After seeing Olivia Colman in a platonic navy V-neck, I’m also considering this from &Daughter, or this V-neck so high it’s almost a crew from Brooke Callahan.

Like Jacob, I’m contemplating jeans, too: I like what’s happening at the waist on these Vic jeans from B Sides.

And perhaps because I can’t afford most of my desires, accessories are appealing. Ever since this photo of “seed” earrings from Lemaire crossed my feed, I’ve been stuck on cluster-y jewelry. A quick Etsy search yields plenty of reasonable vintage options to scratch the itch, like this bunch of pearls or these silver studs.

But speaking of Lemaire … should I buy this fetching foulard top in the perfectly esoteric shade of “basalt”?

Sandra Garcia: I saw a post on X that said living in New York City in the fall is like the great jacket Olympics. It is. And it’s inspiring. To catch up, I’ve been looking at this jacket from Human Assembly in a warm shade of brown. I’m also flirting with this trench from California Arts in a slightly unusual (for a trench) olive green.

Callie Holtermann: A few weeks ago I was marveling at the “Colorblind Test” T-shirt from Fashion Brand Company, which is a good joke that I also happen to think is kind of a cute shirt. It sent me down a rabbit hole looking for low-contrast stripes — the sort of navy-on-brown or red-on-maroon action that might give you a mild headache.

I’m drawn to these tops from Toast and Damson Madder (that second one gets points for asymmetry). As much as I love the colors, I think this layered option from Staud has gone too far.

Yola Mzizi: It sounds cliché, but it’s true: I love it when my clothing reflects my typically sunny mood. I feel most like myself when I’m wearing some sort of color or pattern or funky shape. I have too many fun sweaters, so for the fall, I’m focusing on bottoms and shoes. I really like these Mary Janes from Tory Burch — they’re practical yet kooky. I’d probably wear them with a black turtleneck and these trousers from Reformation (which I may or may not have already purchased).

Other things worth knowing about:

  • As was widely expected, Anthony Vaccarello is leaving Saint Laurent after 10 years. Vaccarello’s final runway show last month in Paris was a gilded “greatest hits” from the label’s archives held under two flying-saucer chandeliers. Quite an extravagant adieu. No announcement on who comes next at Saint Laurent.

  • Gauthier Borsarello, the former creative director of Fursac (reductively, the French J. Crew) is taking over the old Husbands shop in the Second Arrondissement for his new brand, Gersaint. Over text, Borsarello told me he would get the keys this month, so expect it to open next year.

  • The thing I wish I had a better photo of from Paris: These Hermès slippers (above), which looked as if they were made out of chopped-up throw pillows from the Hearst Castle.

  • A new documentary on André Leon Talley is screening at the IFC Center this weekend.

  • According to a rep for A24, tens of thousands of people are on the wait list for its $42 set of Robert Pattinson nesting dolls. It’s the ultimate holiday gift for your nephew who spent 40 minutes last Christmas explaining that “High Life” is good, actually.

  • The ideal outfit to wear while winning the Nobel Prize.

  • Eckhaus Latta is having a sample sale this weekend to tide you over till the cool clothes it showed on the runway last month hit stores in the spring.

  • The Used Internet Shop, one of the best places to find affordable vintage Yohji Yamamoto online, has reopened its web shop. Per its Instagram, more stuff will be added tomorrow.

What we’re reading and watching:

  • The lady digging deep tunnels under her house is back at it. As before, we can’t look away.

  • Keith McNally is really the only person using Instagram right.

  • Taste!

  • “She believed in love, and her capacity for loving was like a boxer’s heavy bag, sturdy and inured to blows.”

Sheer black stockings seem to be everywhere. I thought a bare leg was a step forward rather than pantyhose. Am I wrong? — Alexandra, Chicago

It is a truism of fashion that what goes out must come in, and sheer black hosiery, a trend most associated in recent times with the 1980s, has been due for a revival. … Read more.
