President Donald Trump has become the single most important gift to congressional Democrats going into the midterms, Democratic strategist Paul Begala told CNN’s Kasie Hunt on Thursday afternoon.
The president has been jetting around the country trying to prop up GOP candidates as polls continue to show sinking prospects for the party, most recently at a rally for Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton in San Antonio.
More recently, former President Barack Obama has begun to campaign himself — which is “great,” said Begala, but “he’s not our greatest asset. President Trump is.”
“This is structural,” he said. “When you have the House, the Senate, and the White House, you’re going to have a correction. That’s why I’m 100% certain [the midterms] is a win at least.” Begala noted that when he worked for former president Bill Clinton, he lost 54 House seats in the 1994 “Republican Revolution” midterm, while Obama lost 63 in 2010 and Trump lost 41 in 2018.
And in that Trump loss, Begala added, “he was at 45 percent,” while current polls put him in the low 30s.
“He’s out there in our face, even though he’s the problem,” said Begala. “He has caused our pain. He needs to hide. His staff needs to tell him, you know, we have that new bunker under your white trash Jeffrey Epstein ballroom, sir, why don’t you go in there and lock him in? Because that’s the only chance Mike Rogers, these Republicans have. With Trump in our face, he’s killing his own party by doing that.”
“I don’t know if he’s like a secret plant or what, but I want to send him a fruit basket!” Begala concluded.
