President Donald Trump is making his third trip to Texas in a month to campaign for Senate candidate Ken Paxton, but a CNN supercut shows him sounding more like an insult comic’s routine than a vote of confidence.
Paxton, the Texas attorney general, is locked in a tight race with Democratic state Rep. James Talarico in a state long considered safely Republican, and CNN’s Kate Bolduan said the mood inside the GOP “does not seem to be improving, with Republicans on edge” less than a month before Election Day and early voting already underway.
“The president’s endorsement of Paxton hasn’t exactly always been glowing,” Bolduan noted as she introduced the montage.
“So, Ken Paxton, you might not like the way he dresses, he may not dress right. he may not talk exactly perfectly,” Trump said at one event, “and he may not be the best-looking guy I’ve ever seen.”
“I said, I’m not sure if I like your look,” Trump said in another. “I’m not sure if I like the way you dress. I don’t like the way you talk.”
And in a third: “He can be a pain in the a– sometimes, I’ll be honest.”
Texas isn’t the only red state worrying Republicans. A top political forecaster has moved two more Senate races toward Democrats, shifting Alaska from toss-up to lean Democrat and South Carolina from safe Republican to likely Republican.
CNN’s Alayna Treene said Trump is expected to repeat his recent message urging supporters to vote as if he were on the ballot because his team believes driving turnout is the one thing his appearances can actually accomplish.
Treene noted that Trump has spent recent days in deep-red states, including Oklahoma, Alabama and Nebraska, “places where he’s actually wanted.”
His team is also worried about Trump’s tendency to go off script, as seen in the supercut. On Monday night in Nebraska, he drew criticism for suggesting that Iran could have attacked and taken out cities like San Diego and Los Angeles.
“He likes to go off script, as everyone knows,” Treene said. “But sometimes that has ended up giving him more controversy.”
Trump is expected to campaign almost daily until Election Day on Nov. 3, focusing on getting his supporters to the polls.
