CNN starved President Donald Trump of attention as he delivered a speech at the United Nations General Assembly.
The president had banned CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House press pool and lashed out at the network’s Kaitlan Collins when she asked him a question upon his arrival at the UN Headquarters, but “The Situation Room” pivoted away from the address entirely.
“It’s an honor to be here,” Trump said, as Collins approached. “I’m surprised that CNN is here covering me.”
“The United Nations allowed us in, sir,” Collins interjected.
“You should not be here covering me,” Trump replied. “You said you weren’t going to cover me. You shouldn’t be covering me.”
Collins reported on the encounter toward the end of “CNN News Central,” moments after it took place, but “The Situation Room” did not mention that interaction or show the president’s UN address.
In fact, a review of online transcripts shows anchors Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown did not mention the president’s speech once in the 10 a.m. hour, and instead featured reports on a fatal crash of a firefighting helicopter at Yosemite National Park and a Mississippi grand jury finding no evidence to bring charges in the death of Nolan Wells.
Blitzer did notify viewers of the speech at the top of the 11 a.m. hour, after previewing upcoming reports on the ICE shooting in Austin, a Department of Justice deadline and GLP-1 drugs.
But that brief mention only served to set up a report on new CNN polling that found all-time low support for his handling of foreign policy, but they did include a brief update on the address at 11:09 a.m. from global affairs analyst Kim Dozier outside the event.
