Lena Dunham hinted at plans to have a baby via surrogacy months before she became a mom.
During an April appearance on “Today With Jenna & Sheinelle,” the “Girls” creator — who had a hysterectomy in 2017 due to pain caused by endometriosis — said she hadn’t closed the door on having children with her husband, British musician Luis Felber.
“Some people don’t dream about being mothers, but I had. And a big part of my identity was that I was going to do that someday and in this way,” she shared.
“The amazing thing is since then I have met so many people who have built their families in so many different ways, and I’ve really come to a place where I feel really excited,” Dunham added.
“Whatever way it happens, I will be so grateful.”
On Wednesday, the “Too Much” alum revealed in an op-ed for Vogue that she and her husband had welcomed a baby girl.
“I sat on a hospital bed, between the legs of a woman I hadn’t known a year ago, waiting for a glimpse of this person who I had been waiting for with something related to patience, but also none at all,” she wrote.
“I saw her face, gasping just as she did. Her eyes, wide and unfocused, taking in the light and shadow, blinking rapidly,” Dunham added.
The actress recalled saying hello to the little one and telling her that she was her “mama.”
Page Six reported that the couple is currently in the US and will soon head back to their home in North London.
Dunham and Felber, both 40, married in a secret ceremony in September 2021 after a whirlwind seven-month relationship.
The Golden Globe winner has been open about her health issues over the years.
When she was just 31, Dunham had to undergo a hysterectomy due to severe endometriosis, a condition where tissue grows outside the uterus.
In April 2018, Dunham entered rehab to treat an addiction to benzodiazepines, which worsened alongside post-surgical prescription pain management.
That October, the writer underwent two-hour emergency surgery to remove her left ovary, which was encased in scar tissue and pressing heavily on surrounding nerves.
After being photographed walking with a cane, Dunham revealed she had been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a connective tissue disorder causing chronic joint pain.
Despite the many health ailments, Dunham attempted to have a child through in vitro fertilization (IVF), however, she learned that none of her remaining embryos were viable.
