‘Oh hell no!’ Trump sparks fury as he doubles down on latest name-change obsession

President Donald Trump sparked outrage Sunday as he doubled down on his latest name-change fixation, this time with his eyes set on the state of New Mexico.

“Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico, one of the great vote cheating states of all time, to NEW AMERICA,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. “So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State. Wow, I Love It!!!”

Alongside his remarks, Trump also shared a video that appears to be generated with artificial intelligence depicting him slapping a sticker with the word “AMERICA” on it over a highway sign reading: “Welcome to New Mexico.” The depiction of Trump is then shown dancing to the Village People’s “YMCA.”

Trump floated changing New Mexico’s name to “New America” earlier on Sunday with one of dozens of social media posts — a posting spree that sparked concern for Trump’s mental well-being among onlookers.

“Oh hell no!” wrote Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-NM) in response to Trump’s suggestion. “Our state’s name carries generations of history, culture, and family — and it belongs to us. We’re New Mexicans. Period.”

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) highlighted what he characterized as Trump’s misplaced priorities given the soaring gas prices amid the president’s deeply unpopular war against Iran.

“Average gas prices hit the highest monthly levels in history in August. Diesel prices hit an all time record high in September,” Lieu wrote Sunday in a social media post on X.

“What are trump and Republicans focused on? Changing the name of New Mexico to New America. November is coming.”
