Summary

  • Audi reshapes F1 leadership, Binotto takes full project lead
  • Foyer appointed COO, replacing outgoing CEO Adam Baker
  • 2026 F1 entry to merge car and powertrain development under new structure

Audi has announced a major organisational shake-up as it gears up for its Formula 1 debut in 2026, restructuring its leadership to streamline development efforts. Former Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto will now lead the Audi F1 Project, expanding his role to oversee development across the brand’s facilities in Hinwil, Neuburg and a forthcoming UK technical centre.

The restructuring also includes the appointment of Christian Foyer as Chief Operating Officer of Audi Formula Racing GmbH, the arm responsible for the development of Audi’s F1 hybrid power unit. Foyer brings nearly two decades of Formula 1 and motorsport operations experience, taking over responsibilities previously held by outgoing CEO Adam Baker, who is leaving the project by mutual agreement.

With the CEO position now eliminated, Audi says this new structure will help ensure seamless integration between race car and powertrain development. Stefan Dreyer remains Chief Technical Officer and will also act as spokesperson for the AFR management board.

The German automaker is set to take over the Sauber team for its 2026 entry, with recent additions including Team Principal Jonathan Wheatley, formerly of Red Bull. Audi’s entrance marks one of the sport’s most anticipated transitions as the F1 grid prepares for new engine regulations.
