Attorney and former Trump administration official Ty Cobb sounded the alarm Saturday over what he warned was a major threat to the upcoming midterm elections, one solidified with the Senate’s confirmation of Todd Blanche as attorney general earlier that same morning.
“Come 2028, does American democracy survive Donald Trump?” asked former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan in a video published Saturday by Zeteo.
“I’m not sure they survive it in 2026,” Cobb bluntly responded.
With Blanche being confirmed to his position in a narrow vote early Saturday morning, Hasan asked Cobb how an effort by President Donald Trump to interfere in the 2026 midterms might look different from his push to overturn the 2020 election.
“Last time an election didn’t go Donald Trump’s way in 2020, his then-Attorney General Bill Barr repeatedly refused to cave to pressure to declare there was widespread voter fraud – he resigned saying there wasn’t,” Hasan said. “If the midterms don’t go Trump’s way this fall, is there any world in which Todd Blanche stands up to Trump if he’s asked to find some fake evidence of voter fraud, or are we screwed now?”
Without hesitation, Cobb delivered his bleak assessment.
“We’re screwed,” he said.
“Great,” Hasan sarcastically quipped. “That’s what I suspected.”
Specifically, Cobb predicted that the Trump administration – with the support of Blanche as its attorney general – would engage in a series of “contemptuous acts” involving House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), as well as voter intimidation tactics involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“I think the level of noncompliance will accelerate greatly after the midterms, and that’s assuming that the midterms actually produce a Democratic Congress,” Cobb said.
“Even though a Democratic Congress is legitimately elected, whether they get seated or not under little Mikey Johnson and his service to the president, that remains to be seen. And the dangers that we anticipate around that election, ICE in the street – Blanche has suggested people should be happy to see ICE at the polls. I think it’s almost certain they will be there, I think, sadly, there will be more violence.”
