President Donald Trump’s attack dog in the Federal Communications Commission issued a dark threat to a media behemoth during a new podcast interview over an ongoing investigation into its diversity policies.
FCC Chair Brendan Carr on Tuesday told right-wing podcaster Katie Miller, host of “The Katie Miller Podcast” and wife of Stephen Miller, Trump’s deputy chief of staff for policy, that his agency has “evidence” that Disney had instituted policies that gave employees “different opportunities” based on their demographic information. Carr added that the agency’s investigation into the company remains ongoing.
“We’re going to get more discovery from Disney on that, but it could raise character questions about the company long-term,” Carr said.
Carr also lobbed a subtle threat at Disney when Miller asked about what could happen next in the investigation.
“You have licenses that come due every so often. You can accelerate when a license comes due and say, ‘Hey, we have significant concerns about how you are conducting your operations. We want to review your license now and decide if it is in the public interest,’” Carr said.
He added that the FCC could force Disney to go through a multi-month process to determine whether it was acting in the public interest, as required by federal broadcasting regulations.
“Ultimately, if we decide to pull a license from a big broadcaster like that,” he said, referring to Disney, “it will be decided by their own conduct. It will be up to them.”
