A House Republican offered a vulgar take on Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) strategy to end the partial government shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, according to a new report.
DHS has been shut down for several months after Democrats refused to pass a bill to fund the agency. The Democrats dug in after President Donald Trump’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers shot and killed two American citizens during “Operation Metro Surge,” which sent thousands of officers into Minneapolis to combat local protests against deportations.
Some Republicans on the Hill appear to be growing frustrated with how Johnson is navigating the situation, according to a Politico report. Some told the outlet that they miss the “one-on-one arm-twisting” that former Speakers used to whip votes.
Johnson has also been slow to move legislation to refund DHS to the floor for a vote, according to the report.
“Plenty of Republicans — both centrists and conservatives — are growing frustrated that Johnson isn’t just putting the Senate-approved DHS funding bill, the other part of the party’s two-part plan, on the floor,” it reads in part. “The bill includes funding for Secret Service paychecks, among other key security-related matters.”
“’This is bats—,’ another House Republican said about Johnson’s plan to push through several other bills this week but not yet the DHS fix,” it added.
