Man Is Killed in Early Morning Stabbing Near Times Square

A 23-year-old man was fatally stabbed in Midtown Manhattan near Times Square early on Monday, police officials said.

Officers received a 911 call just after 1 a.m. about an assault near the corner of West 49th Street and Seventh Avenue, near Junior’s Restaurant and Bakery and about a block north of M&M’s New York, a popular candy-themed tourist attraction.

The man, Daevon Silva of Rhode Island, was found stabbed several times in the back and once in the right thigh, the police said. Emergency workers took him to Bellevue Hospital, where he died.

No arrests have been made, the police said.

Investigators are searching for three men who ran south on Seventh Avenue after the attack, according to an internal police report. One was carrying a baseball bat and wore a black ski mask and had hit Mr. Silva with the bat before he was stabbed, according to the report.

The stabbing happened a day after another homicide in Midtown, the fatal shooting of a 39-year-old Brooklyn man named Gibson Winters, and about a week after an attack on Kris Boyd, a defensive player for the New York Jets. Mr. Boyd was shot early on Nov. 16 on West 38th Street near Seventh Avenue and is recovering, the police said.

Overall, violent crime in Midtown, including murders and shootings, has remained roughly the same as last year, according to the most recently available police data.

In the Midtown North Police Precinct, the patrol area where Mr. Silva was stabbed and Mr. Winters was shot, major crimes have increased about 2 percent this year compared with last year, according to police data. There were 2,315 major crimes — including rape, murder, robbery and felony assault — between Jan. 1 and Nov. 16 compared with 2,265 during the same period in 2024.

Investigators believe they have identified at least one person involved in Mr. Boyd’s shooting in the neighboring Midtown South precinct, according to Joseph Kenny, the Police Department’s chief of detectives. So far, no arrests have been made.

Mr. Boyd, 29, had just left dinner at a nightclub, Sei Less, with two other Jets players and a friend when another group of around five men began taunting the athletes, Chief Kenny said. A fight ensued and Mr. Boyd was shot in the abdomen.

The bullet traveled to his lung and was lodged in his pulmonary artery, Chief Kenny said.

About 4:15 a.m. Sunday, Mr. Winters, who is from Crown Heights, was shot in the back and groin on 12th Avenue between West 46th and West 47th Streets, about a block from the Hudson River, the police said. He collapsed near a nightclub, and emergency workers took him to Mount Sinai Morningside, where he died, the police said.

As of Sunday, no arrests had been made in that shooting, the police said.
