CNN’s Audie Cornish instantly rejected a conservative panelist’s attack line against Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
Panelists on “CNN This Morning” discussed the stunning flip by Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI), who had lost to El-Sayed in the Democratic primary, to endorse Republican nominee Mike Rogers, but they disagreed how much impact that her last-minute betrayal would impact the race.
“I don’t know how many voters are going to vote for Mike Rogers, because Haley Stevens is endorsing him,” said New York Times correspondent Zolan Kanno-Youngs.
Anti-trans activist Terry Schilling disagreed, arguing that the episode cast doubt on El-Sayed’s candidacy.
“We’re blaming Haley Stevens for endorsing Mike Rogers,” Schilling said. “Is there any responsibility on El-Sayed? I mean, isn’t this kind of a reflection about how unreasonable and not moderate El-Sayedl-Sayed is going to be in the U.S. Senate, that he can’t even win over his Democratic primary opponent? I mean, this is a standard operating procedure.”
Cornish immediately expressed her doubts.
“That’s a crazy argument,” she said.
“I don’t think it’s that crazy because every other Republican,” Schilling insisted, as the other panelists shook their heads and expressed disapproval. “I just completely disagree because it’s your job as the candidate to win over the endorsements. It’s not Haley Stevens’ fault that he couldn’t.”
“The entire Michigan Democratic Party, including Mallory McMorrow, are all in lock step for this campaign,” interjected Yasmin Radjy, of Swing Left.
“[Sen.] Elisa Slotkin and other Jewish voters are supporting Abdul El-Sayed,” added Democratic strategist Maria Cardona.
