President Donald Trump seemed to lament the GOP’s souring midterm prospects during a bizarre speech at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Monday.
Trump delivered his final midterm speech at the reflecting pool, where he touted plans to renovate it and made multiple baseless claims about his economy. During the meandering speech, Trump also seemed to acknowledge that the GOP could suffer significant losses in the midterms, which would jeopardize his entire second administration.
“With all of those records, it doesn’t matter if we’re going to be foolish and let people that hate our country win an election,” Trump said. “Because if the people who voted for me had voted in the last election, where we had a great victory, if they go out and vote, we will win in a landslide.”
“Now, usually that doesn’t happen because a sitting president … good or bad … for some reason the sitting president doesn’t win the midterms, but we gave this a very strong shot,” he continued.
Trump’s comments were made just a day after the final Senate midterm poll showed Democratic candidates favored to win in multiple key races. For instance, the poll showed Abdul El-Sayed leading Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan by 11 points, and Josh Turek leading Rep. Ashley Hinson in Iowa by one point.
