James Carville became the latest to tear into Michigan Rep. Haley Stevens on Sunday, accusing the Democrat of selling her soul for a cheeseburger after she abruptly endorsed a MAGA Republican two days before the midterm elections.
Within hours of Stevens posting a video endorsing former GOP Rep. Mike Rogers for Senate, the 82-year-old famed Democratic strategist made her the opening target of his podcast, “Politics War Room.”
“I think El-Sayed offered her one cheeseburger and Rogers offered her two cheeseburgers, and in the spirit of John Fetterman, give me another cheeseburger and I’ll give you my soul,” Carville said.
“I mean, lady, if you’re going to sell your soul, you got to get more for it than a … cheeseburger. OK?”
Stevens, 43, left her own party aghast with her announcement, which resulted in most of her staff immediately quitting. The congresswoman previously branded Rogers “another rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s dangerous agenda” and lost the August 4 primary to progressive Abdul El-Sayed, who she was supposed to spend the final weekend before Tuesday’s vote campaigning alongside.
Carville declared her career finished.
“You got to put some kind of a price on yourself, for some kind of a goddamn self-pride. But your political [career] is over,” he said.
He warned her not to expect loyaltyfrom her new allies.
“If you think that these Republicans are going to treat you as anything other than what they view you as, and that is, let me just break the news to you, a used condom,” Carville said. “The Democrats don’t even think you’re worth a used condom.”
The party backlash was swift. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called Stevens’ move a “despicable betrayal,” and the Democratic National Committee condemned it as “a betrayal of the values of the Democratic Party.”
El-Sayed’s campaign raised more than $1.2 million within hours of the flip, Politico reported. A New York Times/Siena poll released Sunday showed him leading Rogers 53 percent to 42 percent among likely voters.
Carville closed with a call to action.
“Say, ‘Vote. Goddamnit, vote. The future of the United States is at stake,’” he said.
