A 21-year-old Daytona Beach woman was arrested Friday after authorities said she posted a threat on Instagram to shoot President Donald Trump at his rally in the city.
Allison Jeanne Albro faces charges of written threats to kill and unlawful use of a communications device, reported WFTV-TV.
According to the sheriff’s office, Albro posted a selfie Thursday night with the caption: “Going to the trump rally in my city tmr so I can shoot him with my glock! wish me luck guys!!”
The FBI alerted detectives with the Daytona-area investigative unit to the post on Thursday, WFTV reported. Staff at the Volusia Crime Center quickly identified Albro as the person allegedly responsible.
Albro was arrested by the sheriff’s office’s Domestic Security Unit and the U.S. Secret Service. She told law enforcement that her post was meant as a joke, that she doesn’t have access to a firearm and that she would never hurt anyone, according to the sheriff.
“We are not going to tolerate threats to assassinate the president,” Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood posted on Facebook. “Allison Albro, 21, Daytona Beach, is learning that the hard way.”
“Today she’s sitting in jail,” Chitwood added. “I would strongly advise anyone else thinking of posting a ‘joke’ along these lines to think twice.”
The sheriff said his office is working “hand in hand with the Secret Service, FBI and all our law enforcement partners to ensure this presidential visit to Daytona Beach is a safe event for all who attend, and for our whole community.”
Trump is scheduled to hold a rally in Daytona Beach on Friday evening, one of his final in-person campaign stops before Tuesday’s midterm elections.
The 80-year-old had canceled planned rallies for this weekend in Kansas and Iowa in favor of tele-rallies, but he added those two back to his travel schedule for Sunday.
