Former federal prosecutor Mimi Rocah blasted President Donald Trump’s Justice Department on Monday after former FBI Director James Comey was hit with a third round of criminal charges, calling the latest case part of a “pattern of harassment.”
“I’ve never seen an individual charged in a short period of time with three different sets of charges,” Rocah said on CNN, noting that the allegations involved years-old conduct.
“These look vindictive. They are vindictive,” she added.
Rocah, a former New York district attorney, expressed disbelief at the latest prosecution of Trump’s longtime political adversary.
“I have no words to express the abuse of DOJ power that is happening right now on so many different levels, but coming clearly from the top,” she said.
Rocah also questioned the timing, noting that the charges were unsealed the same day Comey’s daughter, Maureen Comey, won a major court victory challenging her firing.
“I just cannot believe that it is coincidence,” she said.
Rocah noted that the charges were filed Oct. 5, exactly 10 years after the alleged conduct, but were not made public until Monday.
She also raised concerns that the charging document was signed by DOJ leadership and special assistant U.S. attorneys rather than career prosecutors.
Comey’s attorney, Patrick Fitzgerald, said his client “steadfastly maintains his innocence,” adding that two previous teams of prosecutors investigated the alleged 2016 leak and declined to bring charges.
