President Donald Trump fumed at comedian Bill Maher in a 1,300-word Truth Social tirade on Sunday, calling him a “COMPLETE AND TOTAL LOSER” and claiming he was “drunk” at the White House just 10 days after hosting him for dinner.
Trump had hosted Maher, 70, at the White House on Oct. 15 for a dinner that also included Kid Rock and ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith, according to The Daily Beast. The next day, Trump told reporters the evening “was great,” that “we talked about everything,” and that Maher “likes me a lot more than people understand.”
On Friday’s Real Time, Maher defended attending the dinner, saying “I like these dinners” and that “Trump never lost his temper,” but he also needled the president over his poll numbers.
“Trump has the lowest approval rating of any midterm candidate ever,” Maher told viewers. He also joked about Trump’s habit of praising men’s physiques.
It was Trump’s longest Truth Social post ever, according to Roll Call’s Factba.se tracker, and nearly twice as long as his previous record, a 711-word post from Sept. 30, Forbes reported.
Trump opened by branding Maher a “COMPLETE AND TOTAL LOSER” and claimed the comedian wanted him as a guest on Real Time “DESPARATELY,” misspelling the word. He wrote that Maher “was drunk and had alcohol in his hand as he walked through the White House,” called him a “major POTHEAD” and said he “looked like hell.”
“Bill Maher lied, but he lies about everything,” Trump wrote, accusing the host of using a “Laughter Machine” for laughs at jokes that “aren’t funny or even any good.”
Trump disputed Maher’s account that the dinner lasted four hours, writing that it “lasted two hours, maybe less.” Smith, who was also there, has said it lasted four hours because Trump “wouldn’t let us leave,” Forbes reported. Trump also claimed Maher’s friend and business associate, Chuck LaBella, called him 10 times pushing for a second dinner.
Maher had told a different story on his Club Random podcast, saying Trump reached out “out of the blue” by text, “was really nice” and promised, “I won’t say bad things about you like I did the last time.”
Trump called Maher “a coward” and said the evening was “a waste of time,” even as he wrote, “Overall, I thought it was a good meeting.”
He also told Maher, “Bill: Don’t call anymore.”
