A newly announced Trump administration appointment sparked a wave of bewilderment Tuesday after an official portrait of the incoming U.S. ambassador tasked with combating human trafficking circulated on social media.
Barbera H. Thornhill was introduced as the U.S. ambassador-at-large to monitor and combat trafficking in persons in a post on X by Assistant Secretary Riley Barnes, who welcomed her to the State Department.
“Ambassador Thornhill, welcome to the team,” Barnes wrote. “I’m proud to have such a dedicated leader join us as Ambassador-at-Large to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons.”
But the announcement quickly took an unexpected turn as social media users zeroed in on Thornhill’s official portrait, with some questioning whether the photograph was even real.
“Is that a real photo?” trial lawyer Robert Barnes asked his X followers.
“This is a real picture?” Asked journalist Alan MacLeod in his own perplexed social media post.
“How do I ask this delicately,” Florida climate scientist Rebekah Jones wrote on social media. “Was the woman in some kind of tragic accident, or is this just an altered photograph?”
“Important to have someone in this role who will always keep their eyes open for potential traffickers,” The Bulwark’s Tim Miller wrote in a sarcastic assessment of the appointment.
Independent journalist and documentary filmmaker James Li appeared equally taken aback, responding in an X post with: “Bro…” followed by three skull emojis.
Democratic strategist Ally Sammarco offered no words at all, responding only with four question marks, while Adam Parkhomenko, another Democratic strategist, shared a graphic that read: “Straight Outta Mar-A-Lago.”
Canadian broadcaster Dean Blundell was more blunt.
“She looks like a human Picasso,” he posted.
Meanwhile, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) steered the conversation toward the Jeffrey Epstein scandal instead.
“Start with Epstein’s unindicted coconspirators,” he wrote of the administration.
