The leaks dribbling out daily from Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton’s campaign aren’t an accident, political strategist Chai Komanduri speculated to MS NOW’s Ari Melber on Friday’s edition of “The Beat.”
Rather, he said, they’re part of a concerted effort to sink his campaign — for a very roundabout reason.
“I know this is not the Joe Rogan Show, so I don’t want to do conspiracy theory, but we seem to get a lot of leaked audio about Ken Paxton,” said Komanduri. And as to why, “I kind of have a theory that part of it has to do with the fact that Texas is an extremely expensive state.”
The race, he said, “is taking up a lot of resources and money on the part of the Republican Party and John Thune and the DSCC. They don’t want to spend that money anymore. They would rather spend it defending, believe it or not, Cindy Hyde-Smith in Mississippi or, you know, Tom Cotton in Arkansas … there are other places where they would feel that that money would go much further and do much better. And they’re kind of annoyed.”
Melber appeared intrigued by the idea. “If you are pursuing the idea that maybe they want some of this out there to get more help, why would they then also leak on separate days, the infighting with [outgoing Sen. John] Cornyn? I mean, don’t they want to be past that no matter what?”
“I think part of it is, is that they want to show that Ken Paxton is disloyal to Donald Trump,” said Komanduri. “Let’s say you’re John Thune and you want to pull from Texas to put into Arkansas or Mississippi or South Carolina, you need to have the approval of the men in the White House. And what would get you that approval? How about leaked audio of Ken Paxton dissing Donald Trump, dissing his convention, dissing the impact that Donald Trump had on Ken Paxton’s numbers? That would work very, very well.”
The bottom line, Komanduri theorized, is that all of this is “not the sign of a winning team. It’s not the sign of a party that’s going to coast this November to victory.”
