A panel on MS NOW said Saturday that the strongest evidence against President Donald Trump’s ban on three news organizations is coming from Trump himself.
CNN, MS NOW and Politico are suing over the ban, which a federal judge has temporarily blocked. In court, the Justice Department has argued that Trump pulled the outlets’ White House access for national security reasons. But an attorney for media companies noted that Trump himself has undermined that multiple times.
The host then read from Trump’s recent interview with Time magazine. Asked why he imposed the ban, Trump said: “Well, it’s just bad story after bad story… I don’t think anybody should be forced to bear fake news constantly.”
“Does that sound like a national security argument to you, lawyer?” the host asked.
A legal analyst on the panel said Trump keeps making the plaintiffs’ case for them. The networks argue the ban is viewpoint discrimination, which the First Amendment prohibits.
“And what does he say? Well, I don’t like their views. I’m going to discriminate,” the analyst said.
“He’s the best witness for us,” the host added, laughing.
The analyst said she feels “a little bad” for the Justice Department lawyers who have to defend the ban. She called the government’s argument “less than paper thin” and predicted the judge will extend the order blocking it.
“Trump is always his own worst client,” she said.
